How to actually stick to your rehab exercises (even when life gets busy)
It's a tale as old as time. You leave your physio appointment with a plan. You're motivated. You're going to do the exercises every day, no excuses.
And then life happens.
If this sounds familiar, you're not alone. Not doing rehab exercises is one of the most common things people feel quietly guilty about, and one of the least talked about. So let's talk about it.
Why it's so hard (and why it's not a personal failing)
Rehab exercises have a unique way of falling off the to-do list. They're not urgent in the moment, especially once you don't have pain as an in-your-face signal. They don't always feel immediately rewarding. And when you're busy, tired or not in as much pain, it's easy to convince yourself you'll do them later.
This isn't laziness, it's just how habits work. Understanding why it's hard is the first step to actually fixing it.
Practical strategies that actually help
Attach them to something you already do. The most reliable way to build a new habit is to stack it onto an existing one. Exercises after your morning coffee. A stretch while the kettle boils. Five minutes before your shower. You don't need a dedicated window of time, you just need an anchor.
Shrink the ask. If a 20 minute routine feels overwhelming, do 5 minutes. Seriously. Doing something consistently beats doing everything occasionally. Talk to your physio about which exercises matter most if you're short on time. A good physio will prioritise with you, not just hand you a list.
Keep your equipment visible. A resistance band stuffed in a drawer is easy to forget. One sitting on your desk or next to the couch is harder to ignore. Reduce the friction between you and doing the thing.
Track it simply. A tick on a piece of paper, a note in your phone, or a habit tracker works fine. Seeing a streak builds its own momentum, and seeing a gap makes it easier to get back on track without judgement.
Tell your physio what's actually happening. This one matters more than you'd think. If you're not doing the exercises, there's usually a reason: they're too hard, too time-consuming, too painful, or just not fitting into your day. Your physio can't help you fix that if they don't know about it. A good rehab plan adapts to your life, not the other way around.
When life just gets in the way
Sometimes you have a terrible week. The exercises don't happen. That's okay, it doesn't mean you've failed or that you need to start over. Just pick it back up.
Progress in rehab is rarely linear. What matters is consistency over time, not perfection every day.
A note on exercise programming that actually fits your life
At jem physio, we design exercise programs around what's realistic for you, not an ideal version of your schedule. That means being honest about how much time you have, what equipment you have access to, and what you actually enjoy. Because the best program is the one you'll do.
